It is the run-up to a general election and Elizabeth Gaynor, MP, is hoping to retain the safe Conservative seat of Dunstan St Mary, but the antics of the Westminster cabinet are damaging her chances. As her team tries to reverse the downward slide in the polls, the Opposition seems to have advance warning of their plans.
Set against the backdrop of a major football tournament, could Elizabeth’s political future rely on the feelgood factor generated by England progressing to the final? The drama of election night will reveal all.
This comedy lifts the lid on some of the human motivations behind a political campaign and the emotional trauma of being an England football supporter.
(Playing ages are flexible)
Elizabeth Gaynor (F, 40s - 50s) - The Tory candidate and sitting MP. She is well-off and, although not daft, does tend to see everything through that lens. She is always smartly dressed in quality outfits, usually a blue suit.
Claire Southbury (F, 40s - 50s) - Liz's right -hand woman and adviser / fixer. Confident, competent and ambitious.
Matt Willow (M, 30s) - Intelligent and organised. Watches what happens with an air of detached interest.
Debra Case (F, 20s - 30s) - The statistics guru. Clever, with a passion for facts, figures and football.
Peter Black (M, 40s - 50s) - Old-school press officer, self-important, cynical and sarcastic, uses fear and skullduggery to achieve his aims. Hates football and much of modern life. Wears a suit, but always looks slightly crumpled.
Sebastian Hall (M, 20s) - The general dogsbody, going out with Jill. A graduate. Not stupid, but lacks confidence in the face of aggressive colleagues.
Jill Buckthorn (F, early 30s) - The Labour candidate's Press Officer. Intelligent, able, and good with people. Wears smart clothes, but nothing flashy.
